B este Modus is a young collective of DJs and producers / record label out of East Berlin consisting of Diego Krause, Cinthie, stevn.aint.leavn, Ed Herbst and Albert Vogt. The crew’s sound is full of soul and aimed straight at the dance floor, building on the various impulses that each individual member brings to the collective – Influences ranging from Industrial Techno and Chicago House to Funk and Hiphop. The label’s untitled debut release [BESTE001] was a vinyl-only 5-track EP with songs by each member and was sold out within 48 hours after its release. The choice for vinyl is a crucial aspect for the label as it represents their love for sound and a lasting appreciation for the music created, something they see as increasingly important in the fleeting era of digital music.
Locally, the crew is best known for its Berlin label nights in clubs like Watergate or Prince Charles, where they play alongside kindred spirits like Malin Genie, Washerman, Kerri Chandler and many others.
Cinthie started DJing at the age of 16 and played worldwide in countries like Japan, Russia, Mexico and the vast majority of the European mainland. At a young age, she discovered her love for the classic house sound of Chicago, New York & France and the emerging techno and electro scenes of Detroit with a penchant for a young Anthony Rother, Kraftwerk, Aux 88, The Advent, …
Cinthie delivered her first 12” at the age of 20 with a release for Low Spirit and went on to put out music on Electric Kingdom, Voltage Musique and Silly Spider. She currently holds a residency at Stattbad Wedding.
Diego Krause is a DJ/producer who was born in Berlin’s eastern districts during the high times of synthesizer music as created by the likes of Kraftwerk and Jean Michel Jarre. Growing up in the 90’s, he was a direct witness to the golden era of hiphop and spent years producing Hiphop beats before finally making the switch to House-music.
Diego’s sound is influenced by Funk and Soul, Garage and Deep-House and everything in between that is both underground and raw. He has taken his sounds all over Germany and beyond – playing at clubs like Watergate, Prince Charles and Kater Holzig. His DJ-sets are powered by driving basslines with a raw 90’s texture and a tech-ish approach while always retaining a groovy, jacking feeling.
Ed grew into making music guided by a love for the jazz and soul music of the 60’s 70’s and its reincarnation and revival in the hiphop sound of the 90’s as it was crafted by crews like Tribe Called Quest. This phase was instrumental in Ed’s process of understanding music and making it.
After a more experimental period, he finally fell in love with house music, centering around New Jersey house and dub-infused garage but always feeding his dj-sets with a big range of different styles from NY house to deep Italo house and techno. Despite his wide variety of musical influences, Ed always handles the turntables with a very classic approach, delivering a sound that is deep and dubby but very bumpy at the same time.
Stevo took his first steps into music production at the age of 16, influenced at that time by 90’s hiphop, soul and many other genres. The love for unquantized beats – like those of J. Dilla and Madlib – led him into an experimental phase, cranking out copious amounts of broken beat stuff heavily inspired by the likes of Flying Lotus or Steve Spacek on labels like 4lux, Eglo Rec., Sonar Kollektiv, Rooftop Music and Underground Source Rec.
Following his love for dance music and the fattest of fat-ass drums, Stevo currently floats between rough old school house and banging techno-ish productions. In the past months, Stevo has played at Watergate, Prince Charles, Suicide Circus and many more.
Albert came to Beste Modus from a background in experimental left-field hiphop, splicing the rawness of boombap beats with the melodies and harmonics of classic and contemporary soul and R&B. The shift in his vocalism from metric to melodious was inspired by the likes of Peven Everett, Stew Downes and Ben Westbeech. He co-produced one of the tracks on Beste Modus 001 (the label’s debut effort) and is currently working on a first release for Beste Modus scheduled for late 2013.
